About Us

The Chain Gang is a group of like minded people with a shared love of cycling and an appetite for road.

The group was initially formed in 2001 as a result of a widespread food and mouth related ban on all off road, hillwalking and mountaineering activities in Ireland when a ragtag group of recreational cyclists and along with orphaned hillwalkers (some under duress) ,who were co-opted into to dusting off their bikes, took to the open roads.

Since then there have been many saddles raised, punctures fixed, fig rolls eaten, hills climbed, bikes bought and replaced and the group has gone from strength to strength.

The Chain Gang are now regulars on the roads around Kerry, at local tour cycles, the annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and have more recently taken on bigger challenges like the Seán Kelly Tour of Waterford paving the way for bigger challenges in future (Wicklow 200 anyone?).

In 2007 the group secured sponsorship from a local Tralee bar; The Blasket Bar & Restaurant, and Eamon Costello Contractors (Kerry) and in the future will be easily seen in dashing new black, blue and orange kit on the roads of Kerry.

The club caters for leisure, sportive and charity cycle riders with mountain biking and road racing also available options for those with a more adventurous/competitive side.

In 2009 the club saw it’s membership grow to 55, making the Chain Gang the largest (and, we feel, friendliest) cycling club in Co. Kerry.

The Club regularly meets twice a week between mid March and early September with winter rides less frequent, weather dependant and subject to announcement.
